Istanbul Airport (IST)
Istanbul's new airport is one of the most modern and largest in the world, located northwest of the city in Arnavutköy district. The airport was officially opened on October 29, 2018, the national holiday in Turkey. On the weekend of April 6, 2019, Istanbul replaced Atatürk Airport as the main passenger airport to Istanbul.
Today, the airport can handle 90 million passengers a year. In the future, Istanbul New Airport will be able to handle 200 million passengers per year. The national airline Turkish Airlines is responsible for 80% of the total number of flights at Istanbul Airport.
Istanbul New Airport is on the European side of Istanbul, the second airport of the city of Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen Airport is on the Asian side.
Istanbul is the most populous city in Turkey, as well as the cultural and financial center. Located on both sides of the Bosphorus, the narrow strait between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally. Istanbul's population is estimated to be between 15 and 19 million people, making it one of the largest cities in Europe and the world as well.
